Get to know policies, procedures, and requirements

Every online ticketing Website has different policies, fees, and procedures that may influence where you decide to sell your tickets. Be sure to familiarize yourself with each site’s requirements before posting your tickets. Below are some important things to consider when selling tickets online:

Shipping

Who pays for shipping?
Shipping policies vary by site and should be available for you to review before you buy your tickets. Shipping fees range from $3 for standard USPS to up to $15 for overnight FedEx. Certain sites, such as StubHub, will pay for shipping by sending the seller a pre-paid, addressed envelope.

Are certain shipping methods safer than others?
You may not always have the option of selecting your shipping method, but if you do, we recommend that you use a trackable method of shipping like FedEx or UPS. That way you’ll have the ability to track the status of the package. This will help you identify when there may be a potential shipment issue.

Note: We strongly recommend that you do not use standard mail, as there is little protection against loss. If you do use standard USPS service, be sure to get insurance and a signature confirmation.

Payment

If you’re using a third-party Website to sell your tickets, make sure the site accepts several methods of payment (buyers are more likely to buy if they’re given flexible payment options). It’s standard for ticket sites to accept credit card and eCheck; however, if you’re selling your tickets through an online forum like Craigslist, the buyer may suggest PayPal, escrow, or Cash on Delivery (COD).

Credit cards and eChecks
Credit/debit cards and eChecks are the most common forms of payment for third-party ticket vendors, such as StubHub. When you sell your tickets on one of these sites, the vendor will collect the payment from the buyer and then distribute it to you. This helps ensure the safety of both you and the buyer.

PayPal
PayPal is a secure third-party service that allows the buyer to pay you without disclosing their personal information. PayPal is EBay’s standard method of payment; however, anyone can set up an account to buy or sell merchandise. PayPal will withdraw the money from the buyer’s credit/debit card, bank account, or PayPal account, and put it directly into your PayPal account. Although you’ll be required to pay a small transaction fee, PayPal will protect you from bounced checks and fraudulent payments.

Escrow
Like PayPal, buyers who choose online escrow also submit payment to a third-party. The difference is that the payment isn’t released to the seller until the buyer receives the merchandise and verifies that it’s correct. Escrow will cost the buyer about $20 in extra in fees, but you’ll both benefit from the added security.

Note: It’s wise not to accept personal checks from buyers you don’t know. If a buyer suggests paying by check, suggest other options, such as PayPal or escrow.

Different Ways to Sell

Tickets are typically sold online either at a fixed price or in an auction format. In determining how to sell your tickets, research the asking prices on fixed sites and the recent selling prices on auction sites to see where you can maximize your sale price.

Fixed price
If you choose to set a fixed price for your tickets, they'll be sold on a first come, first served basis. Although the price is fixed, most sites will allow you to adjust the price of your tickets after you post them. This can be extremely beneficial if the event date is near and your tickets haven’t sold.

Auctions
In an auction format, you set a starting price for your tickets and then allow prospective buyers to place bids until the close of auction. The highest bidder wins the tickets. On most sites, you have the option of setting a minimum price for your tickets. In this case, the highest bidder only receives the tickets if the bid is above your pre-approved minimum. This can be risky if the event is near and you set your minimum too high.

Note: If you post your tickets on a third-party site, like Ebay or StubHub, you cannot post them anywhere else because you’ll be locked into the sale. However, if you choose to post your tickets on an open forum site like Craigslist, it pays to put your posting on several similar sites to optimize your visibility.
